Recorded across Naarm’s 2020 lockdowns, FIM is a collaboration between three exceptionally honest improvisers: Flora Carbo, Isaac Gunnoo, and Merinda Dias-Jayasinha. Each a dynamic musician and composer in their own right, the trio came together out of a need to stay connected, engaged and compassionate in a time of deep isolation. FIM is a testament to the power of music to transcend physical barriers, and represents a shared journey of musical exploration and human connection during a period of uncertainty.
The album's composition process was a collaborative endeavour, where each musician's improvisational language served as the foundation for creating a suite of music that highlights the trio's shared chemistry after years of playing together in broader projects. This iterative process allowed for spontaneity in free improvisation while providing a broader perspective for subsequent contributions that evolved into fully realised compositions. The result is a mystical, innovative and somehow equally nostalgic work that ebbs and flows as natural as one’s breath.
Recorded by Flora, Isaac, and Merinda on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation.
